Newsvine Guilds Thoughts #003: What is YOUR guild about?

Time for the third installment of Newsvine Guilds Thoughts. This is going to be it until monday as far as this series goes, so I'm going to ask a very broad question which I hope will generate a lot of feedback. No votes or polls this time - I just want ideas, hundreds of them, so many it gives me a headache when I have to sift through them.

The question is, if you could form a guild, what would be the nature of your guild? What would distinguish your little corner of the vine from the rest of it? Content distinctions are going to be the most common response - I, for one, want to see a science guild. But in light of recent discussion, it has become apparent that we are not limited to content distinctions. For instance, theannalog has suggested a guild based around principles of civil discussion. All content is welcome, maybe, provided the discussion is civil? This would require some creative implementation - we don't want to censor people, so we'd have to simply reward good comments and hope that positive reinforcement over time creates more good comments.

Or, perhaps there could be a guild devoted to providing a special service - for instance, a debate guild, which could organize a weekly debate event. The newsvine team has toyed around with the idea of creating special rules and special tools for guilds, so we can be pretty flexible.

So with all of that in mind, please comment on this post. Tell me what the focus of your guild is, and tell me why you think that would be a good idea. If your idea requires some special feature, talk a little bit about that. This is where we just get a billion ideas to expand the way we think about guilds.

Thanks a lot!

I most likely would begin a guild focused on religious ideology and philosophy. At first I thought of a religion guild; however, if you navigate over to the religion tag I personally find that much of the content is quite trivial and uninteresting.

Of course, you will find me in the Newsvine guild which will start up right at the beginning, dedicated to the subject of Newsvine itself.

How about a Guild Guild? This could be where ideas for new guilds are proposed and discussed. Once a guild has enough backing and refinement here it could then be approved (say by having a number of high approval rated members voting yes) to be released into the wild.

Of course the beginings of the debate guild is already in the works. theannalog is hard at work in getting it up and running. We should be seeing some attempt at starting that community very soon.

I also like the idea of science, and science fiction guilds for topic related.

I could also see guilds formed around the idea of creative writing, or historical analysis. So many ideas, so little brainspace.

Vinay,

I was going to suggest Creative Writing if nobody else did; I'm definitely down for that. Science Fiction sounds good to me, too.

I'd also love a Videogaming guild.

I'd also love a Videogaming guild.

As a large percentage of users on the internet are gamers, this would be quite a useful one. I have noticed that the gaming tag section is a mess, and there is not much to offer people who following gaming news.

Great idea SalsaShark

      How about a literature guild? We could do like a book of the month type deal, but unlike Oprah we would totally overkill it with posts about the book, seeds to articles about the author, biographical stuff, context, critical theory, etc. And do a new one each month. What say you?

        OK, I read a book a week. Can we make it a book of the week? :-p

          How about both -- a book a week guild for a quicker treatment, and a book a month guild for a more detailed treatment?

            Also, lets not forget Calvin's idea for temporary guilds - IE, guilds that spring up in service of an event. For instance, all newsviners who get to attend the Winter Olympics can join the Winter Olympics guild and will enjoy heightened credibility for the olympic covergae. They can post news, observations, photos, etc - and then when the olympics are over, the guild disbands.

              I track articles on second language acquisition and instructional technologies, so I could see myself reading or editing guilds on:
              - Second language acquisition
              - Instructional technology
              - Technologies for second language acquisition, audience: learners
              - Instructional Technologies for Second Language Acquisition, audience: teachers, administrators
              - Adult learning
              - First language acquisition
              - Bilingualism
              - Constructivism (a learning theory)

              I think that both the book of the month club and the temporary event related guilds would be interesting and would serve the purpose of a guild, as well as attract a large audience. Going with the book of the month club idea, it might be worthwhile to look at music and more specifically up and coming artists - something to the effect of what you would see on Morning Becomes Eclectic on KCRW with a possibly a wider scope. This could be a top artist of the month or even week. Additionally, I think a suggestion box or voting mechanism would be useful for both the book of the month/artist of the month guilds.

              I would also like to add news event related guilds to the temporary category, which would go beyond just commenting about a story, but allowing seeders ( :) ) to chat, vote on their opinions, include links to other articles on the same subject, add their own images/video, etc. on one centralized page.

                -apple, or mac related guild
                -linux guild
                -hobby guild

                  I would definitely vote all the above suggestions, but most importantly would vote for: creative writing, philosophy, Technology (encapsulates, instructive tech. and others), Books.

                    I'd like to see:

                    • Graphic Design Guild
                    • Art Guild
                    • Photography Guild

                    These would probably need some additional functionality in the area of image display.There'd need to be a gallery function and a thumbnailing function. Also, if Newsvine wants to keep up the "walled garden" there'd need to be a batch upload feature. If, they don't want to host all the photos, then there could be the ability to incorporate an RSS feed of Flickr photos, or perhaps some other way to tie into the Flickr API.

                    There's a lot of possibilities of what we can do with these guilds: contests with guild and/or public voting, "one-person" shows for the winners of contests, how-tos, and -- why not? -- hookups to cafe press or some other e-commerce facility to buy and sell prints, t-shirts, mugs, etc. The revenue could be shared between the creator and Newsvine.

                    Of course, a lot of these ideas might even work as guilds themselves, which brings up the question: do we have sub-guilds?

                    Evano - excellent post, you have good ideas and ask the right questions. "Sub-guilds" may become a topic for a future discussion, as they have come up several times already in this thread.

                    On a related note, "guilds.newsvine.com" is now active. Please watchlist it for an aggregation of all newsvine guild discussion.

                    That book guild sounds interesting.

                    I'd like to create a guild on p2p news - busts, releases, newest p2p technologies/uses, etc.

                      The original post here mentioned a Science Guild -- I'm in favor of that, but I think it would be better if various sciences had their own guilds. Here is an idea for how this could be broken down into further specialization (but only if and when it's really needed in the future):

                      The Physical Sciences Guild

                      * Physics Guild
                      * Chemistry Guild
                      * Astronomy Guild

                      The Earth Sciences Guild

                      * Geology Guild
                      * Oceanography Guild
                      * Archaeology / Anthropology / Paleontology Guild
                      * Ecology / Environmental Guild

                      The Life Sciences (Biology) Guild

                      * Botany Guild
                      * Zoology Guild
                      * Genetics Guild
                      * Medicine Guild

                      I make this suggestion because, though I may occasionally read interesting stories about space, I'm more interested in Archaeology, and would rather not have to wade through things that don't interest me. Make sense?

                        Oh, and in addition to the above...

                        Mathematics and Computer Sciences could have their own Guilds. In most universities, they fall under the same department.

                          Aine,

                          In the long run, that list of departments within the science guild sounds good to me. As a starting point, joint authoring or submitting science papers to peer review might be a way to start.

                          I suspect newsvine will emphasize the impact of science on society more than original scientific research. Perhaps we could interview leaders in scientific research.

                          Examples of what might be interesting on the newsvine science beat:

                          The science of detection in airport, border, and port inspections

                          CDC policies for reacting to epidemics

                          Alternative fuel technologies

                          What we are discovering about our solar system

                          Municipal WiFi and Low Cost Computers: Bridging the Digital Divide

                          These could all be included under a single guild to start with. Then the group could split into specialities.
                          A lot depends on who shows an interest.

                          Hmm... Going to just write this as it comes to me, and if I end up with anything worthwhile, I'll go back over it more in-depth and shape it up on my column.

                          First, a list of guilds I'd join

                          Newsvine Guild
                          Guild Guild
                          Debate Guild
                          Liberal(Leftist?) Guild
                          Economics Guild
                          Computer Science Guild
                          Open Source Guild
                          Literature Guild
                          Book of the Week/Month Guild
                          Graphic Design Guild
                          Rock/Metal (Music) Guild

                          How about something of a MeetUp guild? Where Newsviner's interested in getting together for drinks, dinner, and that sort of thing in the same area could convene. Perhaps have other, larger events - A Newsvine miniconvention at a hotel, or some such. Or even seeing if others are going to be at a con that you're attending. Or a concert. Or whatever. I'm not sure if it might be better to do the event guild sort of thing that Calvin mentioned, or just have it longterm so people would just have to check it periodicly instead of looking around.

                          One thing I was thinking about would be the possibility of guilds interviewing people - Be the authors, scientists, proffesors, or whatever. Have them say "Hey, we have a group of people on a large community driven news site who are interested in interviewing you. Would you care to stop by and chat with us sometime?", and then host the interview on one of the chat rooms, or on IRC, or similar. Online interviews have become fairly common in the last few years, so I think this is a real possibility.

                          The problem I see with the above is that, ideally, if it was a real time interview, it would be done here, rather than having to get an IRC channel setup. However, as far as I know, the Jabber chat rooms don't support a moderation feature, so it would be purely based on an honor system that the questioning would proceed smoothly.

                          That idea might not work out on the whole, unfortunately. There's always regular one on one interviews, though.

                          Expanding a bit on the Book clubs, how about a general Review club? While book clubs, and that sort of thing are more specialized, with discussion between the members on that specific book, and so on, I think a more broad "Here's a review of product/book/movie/game X" sort of deal has merit as well.

                          It's pretty obvious that Newsvine is going to (Has already?) grow beyond just a community driven newsite. It's going to be a huge community in itself, with tons of potential for growth.

                          People have expressed intrest (above, and elsewhere) in a group about gaming. Well, to maybe take the subguild idea further (Though, this would work with it's own guild too), what's to stop us from copying Something Awful, and making a metaclan/guild/whatever for online gaming as well?

                          The columns are already all over the place - Some are news, some are editorials, some are guides, some are discussions, and so on. I think the site has already grown past being newsvine, to being The Vine. The site's main focus is the news - Sure. But the community is already hungry for more.
