Ok, here's the deal. Last week I posted this article to sort of introduce this contest, so let me flesh it out here.

Here are the rules (UPDATED!):

  1. If you are participating, leave a comment in this thread to that effect.
  2. Starting today (April 2, 2007), you are to post an original article every day. This article must be of sufficient quality that your readers can tell you're not just publishing fluff pieces to meet the quota. If the community decides your article is too short or whatever, you must rewrite (that day!) or forfeit.
  3. THIS HAS CHANGED: You may publish to any applicable groups and use any applicable tags, but you must be sure to use the tag LVS0407.
  4. NEW: You must leave a comment on this thread daily with a link to your article - this way we can easily keep track of who is still in the running.
  5. You get one mulligan per month. A mulligan just means you get to skip a day - everyone starts with an April mulligan, everyone who is still in the running in may gets a May mulligan, etc. If you don't use them you can save them up - useful if you go on a trip or if we need a tie breaker in the end.
  6. If you know in advance that you won't have internet access one day, you may post that day's article on the day before. You must leave a comment in this thread letting everyone know what's going on.
  7. If you break your streak and are unable to continue, please leave a concession in the form of a comment in this thread.

Anyway, thanks for participating. Let the games begin!

You made the rules Mykola. What happens when you spend 2 hours writing a freaking article instead of cleaning your apartment, and then click save only for your article to disappear under a Newsvine error? What do you do? Does it count as a mulligan or do you have to write it all over again?

This is like the 6th time it has happened to me. Not one time did I not feel like I was kicked in the nuts.

After it happened to me yesterday, I started writing the articles in word first.
I know its not the ideal method for writing an article, but I'd rather that than losing my work.

that I was going to lose it so I kept saving it in different windows just in case.

I liked the three-tag rule, it allowed you to do the neat things like find anyones first article, or anyones fifteenth, or just one persons third, etc., through tag searches alone. I'm doing it that way, it's not like it takes some great effort.

Mulligan for the 17th. I've been so busy doing the contest, and two other blogs, it just completely slipped my mind. How embarrassing is that? I forgot. Had plenty of free time too. :\

I wanted to win it with a perfect record, but oh well. Don't take this as a sign of weakness peeps, it was a fluke and I still intend to be there at the end.

Question: if you can write an article a day early if you know you'll be busy, can I write two of them today because I forgot about the 17th and "back date" one? Personally I think the answer should be no in the same way that I think mulligans are crap too (in which case I'd be out), but I've seen some crazy stretching of the rules so far and this doesn't seem all that abnormal in light of things.

Nothing personal but if I don't start banking on loopholes this contest will never end.

With people writing 2-3 days ahead, some writing short fiction on a social news site, and still others submitting 30 word entries, I don't think it'll ever end. I know personally than I've written close to 16,000 words in the past 15 days despite having my laptop completely destroyed because of it but I haven't complained about that until now.

If you want to let other people get free rides, but not me, that's fine.

    I'll make do.

There Once Was Light is the first short story in a new series of fiction dubbed, Friday Fiction. Set in a fictional future in which President Clinton invades Saudi Arabia, it diaries the moments before, during, and after a captured Marine's abacination. More than simply a story of torture, the message conveyed should be that there is still light in the world - despite past circumstances.

In its stead, I present A Dream and a Journey - a look at my personal experience in searching for a career I can enjoy. I present my reasoning for pursuing a PhD in Molecular Genetics when I return to The States in August. Here, you can get a deeper understanding of my history and present situation.

With the 2008 election still twenty months away, it seems we can't wait to get a new president in office. There are so many candidates in the running, and it is sad that none of them are really ideal or looking for a way to compromise. Still, we must search for The Ideal Candidate.

Seems I must use my mulligan for the 28th. I wasn't planning on using one for the entire contest, but the festival I attended turned into a party and the a trip to karaoke. Then, due to certain circumstances, I needed to ponder why I seem to lack usual emotions.

Well, I guess I'm out. Weekends are just not good for me to get any writing done, what with kids home, and people coming over and insisting I drink with them and order pizza and then go to their houses and drink with them more, and then waking up in a fog and having to go tutor writing to youngsters, and then counting the minutes until I could go to bed.

Wouldn't it just make more sense to require that participants watch the lvs0407 tag? Or are you really looking for one place to keep track of what everyone's done, so that you don't have to manually count up later?

If that's the case, and you want everyone to report here, we should each have our own comment thread in which we post the links to our own daily articles. It would probably make it easier in the end.

This article must be of sufficient quality that your readers can tell you're not just publishing fluff pieces to meet the quota. If the community decides your article is too short or whatever, you must rewrite (that day!) or forfeit.

I probably have a months worth of half-finished articles in my "unpublished" section anyway.

It's okay if they're horribly outdated, right?

                  :P

Also, is there a "no-meta" rule? Or, must the meta meet some sort of standard?

I'm gonna call it and say that meta is fine, as long as it's not forced. For instance, I'm gonna do interviews and stuff with the community, which is exactly the sort of thing I would be doing anyway. So no rules about subject matter, but be honest and write articles that you would write anyway - or expand your horizons, I guess, really. Either way.

DAMN! ok, I'm out. Chemistry homework and a friend from out of twon took too much time away from me. I wish the rest of you good luck and announce my predictions of the winners:

                          1. Mykola
                          2. Oldfogey
                          3. Sbutki

Myk only wins out because I know for a fact that he spends 80% of his time at work on newsvine. The other 20% is spent talking to girls 6 years younger than him and eating.

Careful Pete, girls 6 years younger than Myk would be about 8.

Myk only wins out because I know for a fact that he spends 80% of his time at work on newsvine. The other 20% is spent talking to girls 6 years younger than him and eating.

Who are you and how do you know that story?

                                            Some thoughts:

I would have excluded weekends, but that's just me.

I would have also made some sort of stipulation about themes: "Week one is interview week. Week two is original reporting week. Week three is meta week. Etc."

Honestly, I think that some people will drop out quickly, but this really "could" go on forever with some people, with no end in sight.

I just think you need some sort of criteria to drive 1) consistency to alleviate weaker entries and make it easier to root out stuff that doesn't cut it and 2) to make it more "contesty" overall and 3) to provide hope of an ending.

I also think you should have assembled an independent panel to determine whether content cuts the mustard or not. Oversight would be nice.

                                            :)

Oh, Jesus. If I really thought these changes were going to be incorporated, I would have suggested them before everyone had made their first entry.

Let's not criticize me for making my thoughts known about how to run a "contest" with a hope of an ending when I have to listen to comments about what people "ought" to write on Newsvine all the friggin' time when there's "no" contest involved.

I was just chiming in, no need to get all indignant.

I thought some of your ideas were great, Brian, and I was actually wondering why you hadn't mentioned them sooner.

This contest WILL end, at the end of April, and then maybe, based on how things went and incorporating some suggestions like yours, the rules will be changed. I'm seeing it more of a challenge than a contest, mostly because I'll probably be out by the end of the week.

Oh, I'm not saying I didn't think the ideas were good, or I wouldn't have made the suggestions.

And, while drinking would be nice, it would simply make my sore throat more sore, so I will probably have to hold out for a few days on that front.

At any rate, the portion about oversight was simply an effort to enforce the rules that Mykola already put in place in his original description. It gives people who aren't interested in submitting daily content a chance to participate as referees.

(And keeps the participants from making arbitrary decisions about the work of others in an effort to win.)

I wasn't particularly reacting to what you or Yasmin said, Vikki. It wasn't until later that my personal opinion was made out to be some sort of Orwellian attempt at control -- for no real apparent reason other than to say something negative about a pretty uncontroversial comment.

For what it's worth -- under the current rules, Sbutki will probably win -- unless the weekend posting gets in his way. (IIRC, he likes to take the weekend off, as well.) He practically makes a post a day anyway, even when there isn't a stamina contest.

The only reason I don't post on the weekends is my weekend job - living with a special needs adult for three days - doesn't have net access.

BUT I'm leaving that job AND my new job has internet access. It's three overnight shifts (9 p.m. to 9 a.m.) so if you think I have plenty of time to write now (I don't actually as I'm running between three jobs) wait until you see me in two weeks at 4 a.m. bored as
hell ponitificating on why it is that... that.. well, I can't think of anything right now but I'm sure I'll think of something.

As for this weekend I have three articles in mind - if I post them all on Friday and note which day or number they are that's good, right?

                                              Oh, wow, that changes everything....

The tagging for this exercise is good - it's taught me the value of having a consistent tag. On my to-do list for one of those overnite shifts is to tag all of my fiction as "sbutki fiction" all interviews as "sbutki interviews", etc.

because there's nothing worse than having to spend hours trying to find your own review from six weeks ago as you try to conclude whether you actually wrote it or just dreamed it or what.

(Though a stick in the eye might technically be worse)

Man, I think it's the last viner standing title that's making me feel like I'm on stage.

Ok, I'll give you my favorite quick joke, and further muck up the already mucked up comments of this thread:

A man walks into a bar.

                                              The man following him ducks.

thank you, try the veal! I'll be here all (insert date period)

News Type: Other — Tue Apr 3, 2007 12:18 AM EDT

I don't know about anyone else, but I think you're fine just the same. No need to be crazy strict about it, since it's all for fun. It looks like we have about 17 players.

I wish luck to (in no particular order): Brian Ford, Redruby, Testicle Pete, Mykola Bilokonsky, Ardith, J.D. Rucker, Jon Gigglemakers, sbutki, oldfogey, indecent, Oluseye Bassir, yasmin, Henry VII, Yuriy Bilokonsky, Noah Bradley, and Eric Atienza.

I've read almost every day 1 article and I've been both pleasantly surprised by quality and somewhat disappointed by length. Though most people seem to average around 500-600 words in their articles, I've witnessed as many as 2,000 words and fewer than 250. Four have proven to be quite popular, while others haven't been quite so fortunate. I only mention this out of boredom, because obviously this is a last-person-standing contest, not popularity. I think that's great, by the way.

I think the greatest task will be reading all of these entries every day, not creating them.

                                              ...

                                              I need Tums(tm).

And yes, I agree. Actually reading the articles is an important part of this contest. Maybe, in the future, we should add a rule that all participants must comment meaningfully on all entries of all other participants? That'd up the ante, I'd think!

That's a great idea. That way we're encouraged not only to write but also to read each other's work.

Well, technically your suggestion was that we do it that way NEXT time so you might be able to wiggle your way out of it this time.

But if it's too onerous and demanding and you have to (insert sound of a chicken that

I'm going to follow up on something really quick here because I think I've spotted a problem. Does anybody know exactly how the timezone localization stuff works for Newsvine? Because I'm seeing Viki's first article as having been posted on the 3rd, but Ardith's second article posted at 10PM on the 2nd.

I'm not accusing anybody of anything, I'm just wondering if there is a TZ issue here that makes things appear to have been posted at times when they really were not. Anybody know or see anything strange like this?

Articles times are listed in your time zone. As such, when I post an article at noon on the 2nd in Japan - it will show up as 11pm on the 1st for those in EST, 10pm for CST, 9pm for CMT, and 8pm for PST. Viki's article was posted at 12:18 EST April 3rd or 11:18 CST, 10:18 GMT, 9:18 PST April 2nd.

As long as Viki lives in CST, GMT, or PST time zones [or Hawaii, etc.] - she should be fine.

good question, I'm not sure - if it's an issue someone can email the staff and ask them. I figure tho that given that this is international we can just sort of fudge time zone issues - let's just use the honor system.

Brian Ford, I like your ideas above - let's treat this as a trial run, and when it's over or if we have two people who can go forever then we'll call it and sit down and discuss what we learned.

                                                  Sound good?
