Battlestar Galactica: The Truth of the Opera House [Speculation]

The ruins of the Opera House on Kobol. What happened here, and why are several main characters seeing visions set in this long-forgotten music hall?

This has been a Look Again regular feature.

Welcome to the weekly Thursday installment of our NVBSG series. Today I'd like to explore a recurring theme in season 4 - the shared vision of the opera house, and what it may or may not mean. As usual, there are spoilers below - so don't read if you're not caught up!

So, if you're like me, you're a bit confused. We have this vision of the Kobol Opera House, right, which is like a recurring dream except that it happens to multiple characters. In this essay, I'm going to first describe the details of this dream and then turn to an examination of the potential metaphorical implications. Finally, as always I'll leave you with some questions and open up the comment thread for discussion.

The Truth of the Opera House: The Dream

In this dream, the child Hera is wandering alone through a richly decorated, atmosphere-heavy Opera House. She seems lost - or at least separated from her mother.

Searching for her in the dream are:

  • President Roslin
  • Her mother, Athena
  • Gaius Baltar and a Number 6

The dream, as it usually presents itself, unfolds as follows: Athena and Roslin are both searching for Hera, running anxiously through winding corridors, looking out of place in a fancy music hall. As the search goes on, they become aware of each other - there's an added sense of urgency, each realizes that she's not the only one looking for the girl. Finally, there comes a panicked climax - Athena and Roslin find each other, but fail to find Hera.

Hera then wanders into a brightly-lit room where Baltar and Six are waiting for her. She joins them, and they lead her through a door into a blinding white light.

The Truth of the Opera House: Interpretation

In thinking about this, I've come to one conclusion: Roslin is NOT the final cylon. Think about it: this vision presents a symmetrical event unfolding. A Cylon (Athena) and a Human (Roslin) are racing each other to secure the Future (Hera). Hera is a fusion of Human and Cylon, and joins with Baltar and Six who are a Human/Cylon couple.

Roslin, then, must be human - for the symmetry. Furthermore, I bet Baltar is also having this vision - though he has so far not admitted it.

So what does the vision represent? Just this, in my opinion: there are two factions who are so wrapped up in competing with each other that each has become blind to the presence of a third faction. Inner 6 / Baltar represent this third faction - and the future of both races lies with them. Hera is all of humanity and all of the cylons - she is the future of civilization, and her future lies with this mysterious third faction. The fate - the very survival - of the two "main" factions lies almost entirely in the benevolence of this third faction. If the power that Inner 6 represents is benevolent, then perhaps we can expect something of a happy ending.

If, on the other hand, that power is malevolent - or ambivalent - then things are looking grim for our ragtag fleet of survivors.

The Truth of the Opera House: Questions

The main question, then, is this: are Baltar and Six good? Or evil? Do such standards apply? Why does Hera go to them and what do they want from her? What is in the room with the bright light?

Other threads to follow: interpretation aside, why does the dream take place in the Kobol Opera House? What's so special about that place? Did something happen there? Are we going to see a return to Kobol? What significance does Opera (musical + performance) have?

What else do you see in this vision?

Here's one thing that jumps to mind: The Opera House relates well to the hidden 4 cylons. They discovered their identities with music, and live every day as elaborate theater - is the Opera House somehow a Cylon stronghold?

And what the hell is going on with this third faction? More and more I feel like the human/cylon war is a red herring - a costly one, one that feels very real to everyone involved, but ultimately one which is distracting everyone, characters and viewers, from the true conflict in the show.

And I feel like that conflict is there and visible if we just know how to look for it.

So, who is the third faction? I think it's the mysterious "Beings of Light" from the original series, but reinvented. They're not angels anymore - I see them as more of a Matrix-style Architect. Whatever is behind that white light in the Opera House is going to be a surprise when we finally see it, assuming we do.

What do ya'll think?

I believe there is indeed a 'third faction,' which has been manipulating things, perhaps the closest thing to that third faction are the basestar hybrids who seem to be able to sense the way things really are.

But I don't think Baltar represents that third faction either. He too is being manipulated. Now Inner 6 - she is still a big question mark as she seems to do most of the manipulation we have seen so far in 4 seasons.

Right, I see Baltar as a pawn of that third faction - but as a good working example of how that faction operates.

And, good call with the base-star hybrids - there's something there that hasn't been explained to my satisfaction.

Is there a human analog to the hybrids? Perhaps priests and prophets? Pythia?

      Perhaps priests and prophets? Pythia?

Perhaps Roselin? She is the only one with such capabilities - that we have seen so far. Although the 'near death experience' with the boat is somewhat different to Opera House visions.

Alternatively Starbucks? We have been assuming that her 'resurrection,' is by the Cylons somehow, but if anything her return proves the existence of the third faction.

      Hmm

        Perhaps Roselin?

I buy into that. Even though her visions are drug induced, that would still make her a holy women depending on how you look at it. The drugs aren't solely responsible for her visions, they just act as a facilitator for her visions. For instance Admiral Adama wouldn't see the same thing if he were taking the same drugs.

Has everybody forgotten Tyrol's son? Isn't he important like Hera? or is the fact that Hera is the first what makes her important?

That's been my question as well. That was one of the reasons why no one thought Tyrol or Cally could be Cylons, because... then their child is no more or less special than Hera, but no importance was placed on their child (or deflected from Hera).

So now that we find out there's another half-breed kid wandering around... what's the difference?

I have always had a problem with the assumption that any of the children are the final cylon. Hara or Tyrol's son or even Tigh's unborn kid all of them are Cylons to a certain degree. But they are too young - unless the show does a 16 years later thing. While they may be important, they cannot be the final cylon.

Besides D'Anna saw a grown person before she got boxed. So it's got to be someone other than the kids.

I want to say that Tyrol isn't a "pure" Cylon because he is one of the Final 5. I really don't have anything more then a feeling, but that is what I am thinking.

I'm not saying that he's the final cylon. He obviously isn't since he's too young to have seen earth, and already a known human/cylon child. I'm just wondering why all of the focus is on Hera and there is barely any mention that Nikky (sp?) is a cybrid.

Right. In other words, is the Opera House shared vision a prophecy or a warning?

Another thing that's been bothering me is the number of apparently human characters who are prone to visions. What's the mechanism by which this happens, assuming it may not actually be supernatural, but, like Arthur C. Clarke's maxim, any sufficiently advanced technology could appear to be supernatural, especially if a person isn't expecting a technological source.

The Cylons have a clear "vector" by which a shared vision could occur. They already share consciousness in some setting (after "death" and being uploaded). They also have some method by which they were able to transfer their consciousness over long distances. Note that they can apparently transfer their consciousness further than BSG's sensors can reach, since they were able to be resurrected even without BSG being able to detect a resurrection ship nearby. If this was just an electromagnetic signal of some kind, wouldn't every Cylong be a radio source and wouldn't a Resurrection ship be prone to detection as a giant radio antenna?

But how are the humans sharing in the visions? We already have at least one more human than final Cylon who has had visions of one sort or another. Roslin, taking a hallucinogenic drug, and Baltar, perhaps mentally unstable. Both offer a neat, traditional explantation for why they're susceptible to visions. We also have Starbuck's premonitions.

Do we include Rolo's cat? Are there perhaps many other people throughout the fleet who are experiencing minor, seemingly inconsequential visions? Could the vector for humans be sonic?

Warning: wild speculation ahead. It's been a while since there was any exploration of the computers that are used in the fleet. I think the last significant examination of them was in the original mini-series. But a running theme throughout the series has been the emergence of consciousness. We've seen both the raiders and the centurions on the Cylon side exhibit emergent consciousness, and they aren't exactly on the side of the human-form Cylons.

We know that the original Cylon war was caused by consciousness emerging among the Cylons and the computer systems that humans used before the war.

So what if this third party is an emergent consciousness in the computers the humans are using now? Humans have severely limited the capability of their computers, but what if the consciousness is spread throughout the fleet, like a giant distributed computing system?

Were Saul's ravings when he first heard the Cylon music a clue? ("It's coming from the ship!") It clearly couldn't just be BSG, if this is true, because Baltar continued to see Inner Six when on New Caprica while under occupation. But a good portion of the fleet had landed, so perhaps enough of the distributed network was intact. We also don't know what the effective range of such communication could be since, as above, we don't know the effective range that Cylons are able to transmit their consciousness now. This shared consciousness may also be manifesting among the Cylon fleet (the baseship hybrids).

Given tonight's episode something has ocurred to me that I can't believe I didn't think of sooner. I will try to explore this more in my recap, but:

A rare but not unique sci-fi plot device is the magic that happens between the cracks of technologies everyone takes for granted. Dan Simmons' Hyperion books fall into this category. The question, then, is this: how does the FTL drive work?

Because in tonight's episodes, Roslin has extended visions during jumps, which are supposed to be instantaneous. What gives?

Right. The inter-jump visions were very interesting. I was reminded of Event Horizon to a certain degree.

So "Adama" could be the final Cylon, and the real Adama could be human? That would be a twist.

The main problem with that is all the final five were supposed to be in the fleet. Adama is one of the most famous people left alive among some 50k people or so. It seems like someone would have noticed an Adama doppelganger.

Maybe there is a difference between human/cylon children:

                                  Hera - 1/2 human 1/2 "regular" cylon
                                  Nicky - 1/2 human 1/2 Final Fiver
                                  Six's kid - 1/2 regular cylon 1/ 2 final fiver

Does it mean anything. I have no idea, but maybe TPTB will flesh it out next year.

The Opera House holds not only the future of what's to come, but also the past. The opera house had housed the final five in d'anna's vision. I believe that the truth of the Opera House is that Earth is the birthplace of Mankind, and that the final five cylons came from Earth and were actually the very first human model machines to ever exist. As a matter of fact they were the first fusions to ever exist. They lived there on Earth thousands of years ago, but had abandoned it because of a war fought between machines and humans. The Final Five didn't take a side in the war, and because they remained neutral, they survived. The survivors of the holocaust fled Earth and found a new home which they named Kobol. After thousands of years of peace there living with the "gods" trouble brewed once more with man, and that world was laid to waste. The survivors of this catastrophe founded the 12 Colonies.
Now everything has come back full circle to Earth. The Opera House explains how everything has come to pass until now, and what will lie for them in the future. Remember what the hybrid on the base ship said, "All of this has happened before, and it will happen again."
