It doesn't matter if you've never written a newsvine article before in your life - this is a great opportunity to build a portfolio while engaging in the community!

You know you want one. This contest is deliberately challenging, but completely doable.

On August 15th I announced the resurrection of an old favorite, the Last Viner Standing contest. It generated some discussion, we came up with some ground rules and Calvin chimed in and offered some prizes from Newsvine.
The idea is to encourage everyone to publish one article per day for as long as they can. Last time, we called it quits with a 5-way tie after 30 days. This time around, we've got a really nice prize on the line - but there's only one prize, so there can only be one winner.
This contest will begin this coming Monday, September 1, 2008. Your first entries are due by Midnight PST on Monday night.
If you'd like to participate, please sign up in the comments below.
Articles are due by Midnight, Pacific Standard Time. That means East Coasters get until 3AM. Sorry to any non-Americans but it would prove almost impossible to coordinate this with subjective timezones around the globe - so we're all going to have to write to an American schedule.
Contestants are allowed to miss one day. Your first missed deadline is a freebie, you do not have to submit an article late or anything. It's the sick day rule. Don't waste it.
Articles may not be written in advance - you may start writing 24 hours before the deadline.
Instead of requiring seven days a week, contestants in this contest get weekends off. During the week, everyone has to write according to the following schedule:
Every article you post must have two contest tags. The first one is "LVS2" and the second is "LVS2-##" where ## is the two-digit number representing which post this is. For instance, your first article will be tagged "LVS2" and "LVS2-01". This system is important because it'll allow us to see, at a glance, your entire submission history.
Every week I'm going to publish a contest update post. As contestants, you are responsible for posting links to your daily submissions in that thread. If you don't post and nobody sees your article you'll be out - so please remember to post!
We want to ensure high quality of all posts in this contest. Anyone can spit out 5 posts of drivel per week - the challenge here, and what should really have you excited, is the prospect of writing consistently good articles. To keep this contest fair for everyone involved, we're going to have a panel of 4 judges. These judges have the right to disqualify any given submission on the grounds of poor quality.
Of the four, two have already been selected and have accepted: Eric Atienza is one of Newsvine's best music writers, and a good friend of mine since High School. I can vouch for his fairness and his ability to recognize lazy writing when he sees it - so look out! Jack Gillis has made a name for himself in the Newsvine Community as, if nothing else, uncompromising. Love him or hate him, you have to admit he's got a perverse sort of integrity - plus he teaches writing.
This week I'm accepting self-nominations to fill the other two judge slots. If you're interested in participating but don't think you'll have the time to write a quality post per day, please volunteer to judge!
Newsvine has generously agreed to provide a prize for the winner of this contest. The quality of the prize is going to be contingent upon how long this contest lasts -
To clarify, if everyone else drops out and you're on day 35 and the only one left, you are getting the nano. You cannot push ahead on your own.
There you have it. Final details: for legal reasons and to my great regret, I *think* the prizes are only available to people in the US. There'll be some minimal amount of paperwork (ie you'll have to sign something for tax purposes) and then that's that.
So, any questions?
Who wants to play?
Who wants to be a judge?
w00t! I'm going to be in.

I will be competing, so look forward to my 1337 5|
Hmm... ;-)
Hmm...
Heh, well if it helps I was in favor of harsher rulings against him on Newsvine Survivor at least once and I think was in on the ruling that eventually saw him voted off the competition.
Eric:
Do me a favor and start a private group for the judges so we can have a group thread ONLY for the judges?
Myk (4.1):
With four judges we'll be able to act as a true editorial board, i.e., within parameters as opposed to rigidly objective criteria. Since "literary merit" is by definition in part a subjective and/or esthetic judgement, it's probably best NOT have publicly posted objective criteria.
I expect you guys to be harsh.
If he's not competing, I nominate Paul William Tenny for judge.
I also think Chasing would be a good candidate for judge.
Myk:
Hmmm. I read the rules above pretty carefully. Did you include the "sick day" rule? I'd say yes, if you haven't used your mulligan you may use it to replace a disqualified article.
I'm hoping we won't have to disqualify anyone. Seriously. If natural attrition produces a winner that would be a best-case scenario. Also, the very fact that there's now a board to disqualify crap may serve as a crap-deterent (I hope, I hope).
But trust me. I can do harsh if I have to, as I think you know.
:^{)>
I think PWT is a really thought-provoking guy, but man -- I think he may just disqualify *everything* as I recall some pretty strict definitions of quality from his corner...
I'll gladly volunteer as a judge.
Much to my regret, due to other commitments, I am going to have to concede the first prize to the next to the last man standing, as I am not going to able to enter the contest.
I am in :)
I wanna play!
Quick questions.
If everybody drops out in 30 days except the winner, but the winner really wants that iPhone instead of the Amazon card can they just keep writing according to the contest rules until they can't, are DQed, or get to 46 days?
Is it left to the judges to determine what we think is poor quality, or are we going to get loose guidelines?
To keep this contest fair for everyone involved, we're going to have a panel of 4 judges. These judges have the right to disqualify any given submission on the grounds of poor quality.
Also, to add in a part of Jack's original proposal, in case of a tie vote between the judges the decision will go in favor of the contestant. In other words, in order to be booted at least 3 judges must agree.
The point of the escalating prize is that as the pool of participants as a group continue to muscle on together, they have something better and better to look forward to. So, no - the prize is what it is at the time the winner wins.
It's tempting, but as a non-native English speaker/writer (hard to get past the judges) and living outside of the US (not eligible for prizes *he thinks*) I need a little bit more incentive. Plus, I already have an iPhone. Furthermore, I know already that I'm without an internet connection September 8th when I'm visiting an underdeveloped city somewhere in Europe (can we have one sick day?)
But most of all, I seriously doubt I can write anything under this kind of pressure. So I just might give it a try.
I think one sick day is a reasonable request. Myk, Eric?
I have to say there is not much incentive here for international writers so will give this a miss. But should be interesting to see the worthy winners. :o)
Ms C:
Oh then HEY THERE we need a couple more judges. You'd be perfect. Dead solid perfect.
Oh then HEY THERE we need a couple more judges. You'd be perfect. Dead solid perfect.
That is a wonderful compliment coming from you, Jack, thank you. But I think the time difference, as well as personal stuff, would not make input feasible, so would have to leave it to someone else. Hope it is another lady, to at least have a female input on the team! :o)
Ms C:
So my cajoling above is falling on deaf ears?
:^{(>
So my cajoling above is falling on deaf ears?
Afraid so, Jack, much as I would love cosying up with you guys to make decisions.
Aww schucks..I guess one can't help being fabulous and in demand! :o)
Calvin, one further clarification: contest is for 5 articles per week. Does that mean that the 46 day prize is available after 45 days (about 6 weeks) or after 45 entries? (9 weeks)
I had 6 weeks in mind when I wrote "45 days", is that what you were thinking?
I remain in like Flynn :-)
It's also worth noting that you stand to give a $100 gift-card to a person who only writes two articles, if only one person remembers to comply, or if all of the initial entrants are bad, etc. Shouldn't (at least) the first prize require a week's worth of sticking it out?
Also, if someone is voted out -- their article sucks -- can they then spend their sick day?
I am also still in! Hope my articles are not too bad.
Not sure how far I'd get, but I really want that iPhone or at least the Amazon card, so I'm definately in. :D
1) I'm out. I'm out of town for business for a month in San Antonio, and won't have time to either judge or participate.
2) Re: Judges. If someone's piece is disqualified, will that assessment come early enough for the person to have a chance to resubmit after the ruling? If so, will the ruling include editorial suggestions? Or, will the person simply be out of the contest, once the ruling is handed down?
I'm in favor of not having resubmission. I want peoples' best effort the first time. I'd rather not provide a cushion of "well, I'm pressed for time and if it's not good enough I can fix it later".
Eric:
Agreed on resubmissions.
Brian:
Come on. "Early enough"? If the Thursday submissions are as substantive as Myk wants, I probably won't read them carefully enough to rule until Saturday.
How will that work? Rulings will be for the week? So, someone could conceivably write a piece on Monday that doesn't qualify, but not find out until after they've written further pieces for the week?
Brian:
How will that work?
We don't know yet.
I do not see how it's possible to rule before the deadline since items could go up at 2:59 am eastern, which means we could be well into the next day before a ruling is issued anyway. Looking at Myk's schedule and knowing my own, I'm roughly confident that IF NEEDED I can help issue rulings on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.
So if someone puts up a disqualifying article, there's a chance they may write one more before the guilty verdict is rendered. Figure that as part of the punishment for posting crap to the front page.
somehow I will have to determine the cut off time for me her on the East Coast of Oz I guess your using New York Eastern time Yes?
Barry:
What's the time difference with Bejing where you are?
I guess your using New York Eastern time Yes?
As noted in article, Pacific Standard Time. NY Eastern - 3:00 hours.
Beijing is 2 hours behind us it is right now 5.33 pm Wednesday 3.33 pm Beijing..
well Bejing is 12 hours ahead of NYC (convenient that the entire nation of China is one time zone so I can remember that).
So you are 14 hours ahead of NYC time - that gives you a big advantage on getting your submissions in on time :O) Since that puts you 17 hours ahead of PST.
That almost seems impossible.
that gives you a big advantage on getting your submissions in on time :O)
only on the first day...
I'm in like Flynn.
I like the new rules.
I'd love to attempt to participate but I'm busy that first week of September and I might need a break after that.
Sounds like fun, unfortunately for me.... not enough time. :'( Good luck!
How 'bout if I give you all a copy of my dissertation in November instead? hahaa
When do we start on the first article?
I'll try it. Been practicing. Oof.
In.
Wait. Looked at the rules again. No poetry at all?
High quality Op-ed. I may be out of my league. I'll give it a shot. Gotta do something at least once.
I'm in. Of course, I highly doubt I'll be able to compete for long, but regardless it should be interesting to see how things go :)
This whole thing is new to me, but I always wanted to see how good a writer I am. I am in.
put me down will be interesting to me to see how long i will cope ...
No really I look forward to the challenge quill pen and ink pot at the ready !
Count me in.
I've sharpened my crayon. I'm ready.
Just realized this, but nobody's going to have a problem starting on Labor Day, right? No vacations interfering or anything?
absolutely not, if that should be every ones sick day, no? lol
Yeah, I do have a vacation that day.
There's just this little convention thing, but I'm pretty sure Calvin expects me to write something from that anyway.
Going back to Labor Day, can I do mine a couple of days early? Or do I need to take a sick day?
After deliberation, consensus is that you'll have to take the sick day.
Crap. OK, I should be back in late afternoon, so I might have time to whip up an article.
I'm in. This sounds like a lot of fun and I imagine it will be very competitive. Luck is random so I'll say God bless (peace, prosperity, health and happiness to you and your articles).
@!$%# it, I don't even know the rules, but I guess I'll be in until you kick me out. After some RNC articles to start the month off, I'm thinking I'll have to sports theme everything ;-)
Also, do the articles have to be in written form? Say, would a podcast count (that would be for Wednesdays the "free days"?)
Adam:
Yankees ... uh ... suck? For once I don't mean it insultingly or fearing that they don't suck.
Did you see the NYT story on yesterday's game? One of the funniest and cheapest shot I've ever seen in a lede in the NYT sports page.
Let's see. The Repubs will give you a week's worth of essays, the Yankees sucking will give another week, and by then Brett Favre will suck, giving you a total of three weeks covered.
No way I could pull off participating, but it sounds like a fun event to watch!
Well!
I take break from Newsvine for a while this is what I come back to? Sweet.
You can consider me in when the judges give full listing of the rules, etc.
This should be a good way to get back into the flow on Newsvine after my hiatus from here and Listen In (Sorry, Eric! I'm sending you an email shortly). My grandfather was feared to have thyroid cancer so I had to deal with that, back to school, and other not so fun stuff, but everything has calmed down now enough that I can get back in the mix.
No promises I'll last very long, but what the heck.
Well you know, Tuesdays are review days... =p
That's what I was thinking.
But Tuesdays are also WNIM days. Which means I'd be writing 2 articles a day. Any way you could permit me to use Wednesdays for What's New, at least until the this darn thing is over?
That would also use up my Wednesday free day each week.
Count me in
